Unlike the thinner, more flexible spines commonly found on typical Astrophytum capricorne, this cultivar produces noticeably heavier, broader, and darker spines that create a striking architectural appearance. The most remarkable characteristic of 'Taiho Gyoku' is its extraordinary spine development. Astrophytum Asterias Cv. Hanaizumi Hanazono Superkabuto is a highly distinctive cultivar combining three remarkable Asterias traits: Hanaizumi, Hanazono, and the dense white trichome expression of Superkabuto.
Hanaizumi, known as the 'fountain flower,' is characterized by clumping areole nodes where three or more areoles develop together from a single node. These clustered areoles can produce flowers, creating the unusual fountain-like flowering expression associated with this cultivar.
Hanazono adds another layer of complexity by producing numerous additional areoles across the body. Rather than maintaining only the traditional areole arrangement along the ribs, the plant develops an abundance of woolly growth points that create its highly textured appearance.
The Superkabuto influence contributes the bold white trichome markings covering the epidermis. Together, the dense trichomes, numerous Hanazono areoles, and clustered Hanaizumi nodes create an exceptionally ornate surface with tremendous character.
