Description

Astrophytum Asterias Cv. Variegated Kikko Nudum 'Nishiki Durian' combines three highly desirable characteristics of cultivated A. asterias: Nishiki variegation, the clean Nudum body, and an exaggerated Kikko growth form. Its most recognizable feature is the development of strongly protruding rib segments that create the chunky, sculptural appearance associated with the Durian form.

Unlike the more horizontal segmentation normally associated with Asterias Kikko, Durian selections push the individual rib sections outward, producing swollen, pronounced segments reminiscent of the textured surface of a durian fruit. The Nudum characteristic removes most of the white flecking from the epidermis, allowing the architecture of the plant and its yellow-to-green Nishiki coloration to become the dominant visual features.

The variegation can develop differently from plant to plant, ranging from predominantly green individuals with yellow sectors to strongly yellow plants carrying irregular islands, streaks, or marbling of green tissue. As the plant matures, the combination of color and increasingly pronounced Durian segmentation can produce exceptionally sculptural specimens.

Growing Nishiki Durian from seed is particularly exciting because several traits are segregating within the offspring. Individual seedlings may vary in the strength of their variegation, degree of Nudum expression, and intensity of the Durian-style Kikko structure. This natural variation gives growers the opportunity to observe, select, and develop exceptional individuals as the characteristics become more apparent with age.

Description

Astrophytum ASCAP Ooibo F2 'Yellow Spines' is a selected second-generation hybrid from the Madam Cacti ASCAP breeding line, originating from an interspecific cross involving Astrophytum asterias and Astrophytum capricorne. This F2 generation represents the continuation of the original hybrid work, where the genetics are grown forward and selected for distinctive expressions.

This particular plant was selected for its large, woolly Ooibo-type areoles and distinctive yellow spines. The oversized areoles create a soft, heavily textured appearance, while the presence of spines reflects the capricorne ancestry of the hybrid. White flecking across the dark green body adds another layer of contrast, making the combination of Ooibo areoles, yellow spines, rib structure, and flecking especially interesting for continued selection.

Growing an F2 generation from seed gives collectors an opportunity to observe how hybrid genetics separate and recombine. Seedlings are not expected to grow identical to the pictured parent and may show different combinations of areole size, spine development, spine color, rib structure, flecking, and body form. This variation is one of the most fascinating parts of hybridization—watching years of breeding and selection reveal themselves differently in every seedling.
