Grow and observe the development of Astrophytum Myriostigma Cv. Kikko 'Hercules' Mix – Japan Strain, a seed-grown population selected for the distinctive protruding tubercles associated with the Hercules form. Unlike Asterias Kikko, Kikko expression in Myriostigma develops as increasingly pronounced protruding tubercles, creating the strong geometric and sculptural appearance collectors look for in mature Hercules plants.
Each 3.5-inch pot contains approximately 10 seed-grown seedlings, all at least 14 months old. One of the exciting parts of growing this Japan strain is patience. The pronounced Hercules characteristics generally become much more apparent as the plants mature, often around 4–5 years of age. A few individuals may begin showing stronger characteristics at a younger age, which makes watching and selecting from the population especially fun.
At this stage, some seedlings may look relatively simple while others are already beginning to hint at their future structure. That variation is part of growing Hercules from seed. Over the coming years, each plant has the opportunity to develop differently, allowing the grower to observe which seedlings produce the strongest and most interesting expressions.
Every seedling is carefully grown from seed in our Texas greenhouse and shipped established together in its 3.5-inch pot to help preserve root health and reduce transplant stress.
