Description
Astrophytum myriostigma Var. Tulense is a highly distinctive regional form admired for its massive body structure, thick epidermis, and heavily armored rib edges.
Compared to standard myriostigma, the Tulense form develops a much more rugged and powerful appearance. The ribs become broad and thick, while the areoles along the rib margins often appear enlarged, woolly, and closely spaced, creating an almost fortified texture around the plant.
One of the defining characteristics of Tulense is its tendency to grow taller and more columnar over time compared to the more compact forms of myriostigma. Mature specimens can develop into imposing, upright plants with a strong architectural presence that feels ancient and almost monumental.
The epidermis is usually densely covered with fine white trichomes, giving the body a soft gray-white appearance that contrasts beautifully against the darker wool near the areoles. As the plant matures, the ribs rise dramatically and create deep sculptural shadows across the body.
In habitat, Astrophytum myriostigma Var. Tulense is also known for producing what is believed to be the smallest flower among all Astrophytum species and forms, a fascinating contrast to its large and commanding body structure.
Many collectors are drawn to Tulense because of this balance between power and subtlety—its towering form paired with delicate flowering behavior.
Growing Astrophytum myriostigma Var. Tulense from seed is especially rewarding because each seedling slowly reveals its own structure, rib personality, and eventual columnar growth habit over many years.
