Origin and Habitat: From the North East of Somalia. This plant has been found in grit in a dry tropical environment with lots of sun. These plants, like most of the succulent milkweeds (stapeliads), are generally fly pollinated, and conveniently smell like rotten meat or some type of manure.
Cultivation:
This is a very slow growing plant. The plant needs a bright exposure, indirect sun-light - this will help the development of flower buds. Long exposure to direct sun-light can cause burns and burnt spots. The minimum temperatures that the plant can withstand is 50° F, below this temperature it’ll begin to suffer. Temperatures between 50 °F - 60 °F will allow the plants to enter vegetative rest which is essential for the flowering of the following year. Use a well draining soil when potting the plant. Watering can be done regularly during the vegetative period. In winter you should withhold the watering to allow the plant to enter dormancy. Fertilize once in spring and once in summer. If the pot starts to be too small for the plant you can repot the plant in a slightly bigger container than its current size. Repotting should be done early in the growing season, use fresh fast draining potting soil.
Propagation:
The plant can be propagated exclusively by seed. By seed it is very simple to propagate the plant, sow the seeds in a sandy loam soil mix and keep it with a high level of humidity and at temperature of 70-75 °F.
Happy Growing!
